Cycling Energy

For every Tibetan Yidam you see sitting in yab yum or in union while standing, there is almost always a practice in which a mantra is generated in the heart, rises through the central channel, and is breathed into the mouth of the sang-yum,1 where it then cycles down and through the sexual embrace back into the male. The cycle spins as you say the mantra and it generates power in line with whatever tantric deity you are working with.

During generation-stage practice this is usually done with a visualized partner, but in completion-stage practice a similar exchange of energy can take place. This spinning of energy, of one person flowing into another in an endless cycle, is a potent method for realizing gnosis and generating power that can be dedicated to practical ends. The circulation of sexual energy through the chakras of one person transmutes it into pure wisdom. The circulation through two people, around and around again, is a potent way of generating a subtle energy and substance that leads swiftly to ascension.

To perform this rite perform your invocations or establish yourself as divine as per the last chapter. Perform the Inner Fire exercise during the first part of sexual play and let the fire rise until you begin to experience the bliss descending. Continue to have sex, and begin to sync your breathing. Kiss your partner, and will the fire to enter into your partner’s mouth. Your partner should cycle it down through his or her own body and back into you through the genitalia.

It doesn’t matter if the woman or the man is the sender, because after a while you will switch directions. Keep switching directions every five to 10 minutes. Sex should last at least 30 to 40 minutes in order for the fire to truly sublimate all the drops and create the “steam” that fuels awakening. If you are doing this in a yab yum position (in which you are both sitting up, with the woman on the man’s lap), you will start rocking back and forth in time with the cycling. This is natural and normal and should be encouraged.

Ideally, both partners should orgasm simultaneously without ejaculating, and draw the sexual fire upward. By doing this you will not only pull your refined essence upward but you will also draw sexual energy from your partner. A man will draw his woman’s lunar essence and a woman will draw her man’s solar essence. This combined essence, which has been heated and refined, will travel through the centers, awakening the powers of each center, creating health and stimulating spiritual growth and experience.

You can continue to cycle between you for as long as you are having your orgasm(s), and even afterward. Remain in sexual union until you are finished. If the man is using the lower lock to retain semen he may be able to resume sex immediately without even pulling out. If he is using the three-finger lock, he will have retained semen, but lost the erection.
